2013 Lexus ES 350 and ES 300h First Test
In the first six months of this year, Lexus sold 18,265 ES sedans in the U.S. --
nearly a 9 percent increase over the same period in 2011 and by far the most of
any car in its lineup (only the RX crossover outsells it). Since the model's
introduction in 1989, the faithful have loved this buttoned-down four-door and
their ardor is sure to bloom even more this month, as the Japanese maker
releases a new, sixth-generation version -- including a first-ever hybrid. The
ES has always been -- and, it turns out, continues to be -- the
internal-combustion equivalent of Top 40 hit from The Carpenters: pleasant
enough, masterfully executed...and almost offensively innocuous. The enthusiast
driver will find almost nothing to latch his soul to here. The Lexus brass
monitoring the sales charts doubtless couldn't care less; for buyers in search
of slip-on status, the ES's relative affordability, proven quality, and
look-what-I'm-driving "L" on its hood ensure this machine will fly off sale
floors like a rocket-fueled iPad. Still, given that Lexus is now touting a
high-drama, $375,000 LFA supercar, who could blame us for expecting some of that
DNA to trickle, BMW-like, into everything the company makes?
The standard V-6 is a seasoned champ, frisky enough to serve in the Lotus
Evora sports car. It's potent, smooth, and makes an aggressive yowl under a
heavy foot. In the ES 350, there's enough grunt to reach 60 mph in six seconds
flat, the six-speed automatic snapping off shifts as if it's a graduate of the
University of Idyllic Torque Management, but don't for a moment think this is an
athletic car. Steering feel is...well, there isn't any. Though the ratio has
been quickened for the new car (from 16.1:1 to 14.8), it's still glacial in
response. Worse is the lack of feedback; the wheel offers little sense of the
road beneath or building cornering forces.
Perhaps that's because there aren't
many cornering forces to detect: both cars delivered just 0.76 g of grip. An
automobile doesn't need lofty performance limits to be entertaining (VW's GTI is
no F1 car, but it's a blast to gun across a twisting road), but the ES
resolutely shrugs off any attempts at driving enthusiasm. It's almost
unbelievable that this machine and the LFA (not to mention the GS 350 F Sport
and the IS F) wear the same badge.
Though we might not have predicted as much going into this review, after
driving both ES models back-to-back it's the hybrid ES 300h that comes off as
the far more appealing car. It's not as quick as the V-6 -- the run to 60 mph
takes a leisurely 7.6 seconds -- but in around-town driving its instant-torque
electric motors and seamless CVT make it feel livelier (despite the hybrid
weighing 161 pounds more than the ES 350).
A silly feature, standard on both
cars, dubbed Drive Mode Select allows the driver to choose eco, normal, or sport
settings to alter the response of the throttle and power steering assist. In the
ES 350, you'd be hard-pressed to notice much difference between any of the
three, but in the ES 300h the sport setting really juices-up the throttle; the
car fairly leaps away from stoplights. In sport, the hybrid's main dash displays
a tachometer -- which takes some getting used to for the first few stoplights as
the needle suddenly plops to zero. While the hybrid is capable of running in
full-electric mode for short periods, doing so requires a delicate right foot --
and keeping the speedo below 25 mph.
Of course, the hybrid trumps the V-6 model on economy: 40/39 city/highway
mpg versus 21/31.
That taken into consideration, the ES 300h really is a
standout: a luxuriously appointed, hugely spacious sedan that returns 40 miles
per gallon in urban settings -- nearly double that of its V-6 sibling. True, the
four-cylinder gas engine in the ES 300h can't match the ES 350's six for
silkiness, but it's respectable. Overall, the hybrid simply comes off as the
more modern and engaging machine.
The ES 300h carries a $2750 premium over its "regular" twin, in return
delivering crisper city responsiveness, far fewer visits to the pump, and the
knowledge that you're demanding a little less of Mother Earth than the driver of
the ES 350 (some might consider that worth it, others not). Outfitted with
navigation, Mark Levinson premium audio, and the Ultra Luxury Package (leather,
climate-control seats, park assist, etc.) our test car climbed to $45,050.

2013 Lexus LS460 and LS460 F-Sport Sedans
The wall surrounding the 2013 Lexus LS has completely broken with some
30 or so high-resolution photos of both the regular LS 460 and the F-Sport
variant of the same model flooding the web-o-sphere.
Taking into consideration the fact that the current generation of the LS has
been with us since 2006 with Lexus performing a mild makeover in 2009, when the
company announced that it was preparing a new model, we believed that it would
be just that and not another facelift.
The exterior redesign is concentrated exclusively on the two ends of the car
with the front gaining a version of the Japanese brand's spindle grille, new
headlamps (very similar to the ones found on the outgoing Hybrid model),
reshaped fenders and a new hood that includes a bulge running along the middle.
At the back, there are restyled and darkened tail lamps connected with a
chrome strip, a re-sculptured boot and a new bumper design.
Making its debut on the 2013 model is the new LS 460 F Sport edition packing
a more muscular appearance thanks to a different front bumper that accommodates
chunkier side air vents, a front grille with a mesh pattern, side skirts, a
diffuser positioned between the tail pipes and bespoke alloy wheels.
We don't for know sure yet, but if the F Sport versions of the RX crossover,
GS sedan, and CT hatchback are anything to go by, then the LS 460 F Sport will
have sportier interior trim and suspension tuning but no engine upgrades.
While there are no photos of the interior, a close up from one of the rear
facing pictures suggests that Lexus has overhauled the center console and added
a large LCD screen on top of the air vents.
The Japanese carmaker has said that the 2013 LS will be available as the LS
460, LS 460 L long wheelbase, LS 600h L hybrid sedan and the all-new LS 460 F
SPORT, with the car's debut to take place on Monday, July 30, at which point, we
will be able to give you all the details.

2013 Lexus has released pricing information
Lexus has released pricing information for the redesigned 2013 ES sedan lineup: The V-6–powered ES350 can begin at $36,995, whereas the new ES300h hybrid model rings in at $39,745. Pleasantly, the 2013 ES350 truly prices $605 but the 2012 model; the hybrid is new to the ES line this year, therefore there isn’t extremely a back-to-back comparison to be created for it. (For a full rundown of all the ES’s changes for 2013, examine our initial drives on the ES350 and ES300h.)
On the flip facet, Lexus claims the ES300h boasts very cheap hybrid worth premium in its entire lineup—it prices simply $2750 over the regular-grade ES350. As way as hybrids go, that worth bump is fairly tame, particularly given the fuel-economy improvement the four-cylinder/electric motor combo provides. The EPA predicts the ES300h can come forty mpg within the town and thirty-nine on the highway; the ES350 gets a way more mundane 21/31 rating.
Given the nearly unchanged pricing—at least for the ES350—the 2013 ES’s worth standing against its competitors largely is that the same. The ES350 still starts a lot of on top of the Buick LaCrosse’s worth of entry (it’s value noting that the Buick gets a typical mild-hybrid system), and its base worth is barely slightly on top of that of the 2012 Acura TL. The Brand new Lexus ES sedans arrive in dealerships next month and consumers are ready to choose between a bevy of optional equipment that has blind-spot monitoring, pre collision system a Mark Levinson audio system, and navigation. 2013 Lexus LF-LC Concept
Love it or hate it, that hourglass-shaped grille from the new Lexus GS
isn’t going away anytime soon. At nominal not if you’re to believe the
LF-LC Concept, that debuted yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show and
predicts the longer term of the Lexus style language.
The new coupe, that was styled by Toyota's Calty style studio in California, is meant to indicate the most recent evolution of Lexus' style language; several of the cues on this show automobile have appeared on previous Lexus production and concept Vehicle. "Our gross studio, worked to nourish this love interpretation of Lexus originality "said Kevin Hunter president of Calty., "The LF LC concept contain our vision of what a premium sport coupe may be. "The mesh spindle shaped front grille resembles that of the Lexus GS for example, whereas the swept-back headlights and stubby trunk recall the LFA supercar. The front fascia options vertical fog lamps in dot-matrix vogue housing that mix into useful air intakes prior the front wheels. different style details embrace a panoramic glass roof with a "cantilevered pillar" and a rising, "kick-up window graphic."
"The concept we're showing here in Detroit continues the Lexus style revolution started with the CT and GS," said Mark Templin, Lexus cluster vice chairman and general manager. "The concept hybrid 2+2 liberates the concept of a sport coupe and pushes the boundaries of performance, vogue and technology." the inside could be a showcase of high-tech controls and infotainment systems together with variety of touch-screen boards to assist the driving force stay targeted on the road. there's a touch-screen board among the middle console, whereas each doors also are fitted with touch-screen surfaces that management windows, mirrors, seat changes, and private entertainment settings. Interior surfaces are coated in leather, suede, and metallic and wood accents. It's rumored that the LF-LC is also headed for production within the close to future. A production version LF-LC would be engineered on a shortened version of subsequent Lexus LS chassis and have a plug in hybrid drivetrain. The automobile is also referred to as the LC 600h and continue sale in 2015.
