2013 Cadillac ATS Scores 22/33-mpg EPA
The version of the ATS that Cadillac meant to spice up the company’s overall fuel-economy numbers has simply received a rather lackluster rating from the EPA. With a Two hundred-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the ATS is rated at simply twenty two town mpg and thirty three highway.
These are solid numbers, however a trifle disappointing in context. The Brand new BMW 328i scores EPA ratings of 23/33 and provides drivers 240 hp and 255 lb-ft to play with. The stick-shift 328i scores a trifle higher, however considering the two.5-liter ATS comes solely with an automatic, we tend to went for an apples-to-apples comparison. Even Audi s s 4 year-old A4 is rated at 20/30, and will therefore with eleven a lot of hp, seventy a lot of lb ft of torque and all wheel drive.
2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe
Let's get this out of the way: The 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe isn't a driver's automotive. you are not getting to be ripping through Southern California's lovely Pauma Valley -- or the other stretch of squiggly asphalt ribbon, for that matter -- while not quickly encountering the Elantra Coupe's performance limits. Changes are mainly from the rear quarter window back where predictably most of the work was done. The distinctive rear finish options an aesthetic try of chrome exhaust tips flush right integrat into a blacked-out lower fascia. The taillights are slightly reworked, and there is a pronounced rear spoiler on SE models. There are alternative little nip/tucks, as well as slightly completely different rocker panels and minor front finish bits, most notably the blacked-out trapezoidal grille treatment, looking on trim level. The coupe additionally gets its own set of distinctive, optional 17-inch alloys for the SE trim.
Powering the Elantra Coupe is that the same one.8-liter I-4 because the sedan, with 148 horsepower and 131 lb ft of torque mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic. whereas a lot of powerful than the 140-hp Honda Civic coupe (its main bogey) and slightly a lot of economical (29/40 city or highway vs. 28/36 for manual models auto models are each 28/39), we'd have liked to own seen some a lot of horses underneath the hood. we tend to hear an update to the one.8 is within the offing soon, which can little doubt facilitate matters. The 2012 Elantra sedans we've most recently tested ran from 0-60 mph in eight.9 seconds in automatic guise; seven.8 seconds with the manual. on condition that the coupe has roughly an equivalent dimensions and weight because the sedan (other than being zero.4 in. longer),
we'd expect similar numbers. we tend to piloted an automatic-equipped model throughout our drive, which does not prefer to hold a gear when spurred laborious. The coupe might use Hyundai's DCT dual-clutch automatic and a few paddles to travel with it. however when rushed throughout our jaunt in and round the Pauma Valley, it did very little to wow us with its dynamic capabilities despite handling updat specific to the coupe as well as Hyundai s V Beam rear suspension with integrated, Twenty two mm rear stabilizer bar, tun dampers and a revised steering rack. Hyundai has left the door open to any powertrain and suspension updates, which might be welcome news for enthusiast sorts. R-Spec, anyone? If you are within the marketplace for a real performance-themed coupe from Hyundai, there is perpetually the Genesis Coupe or the not-quite-a-coupe Veloster Turbo. however if you are finding out a trendy, sporty-ish, fuel-efficient two-door beginning at a modest worth, the Elantra Coupe is price taking for a spin.

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG
2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class specsPrice Range: $48,990
Base Engine: 302 hp /3.5L V6
MPG Range: 17 city / 22 hwy
More power. It's just what every two-and-a-half-ton SUV needs. Not. For that
reason, if you had asked us a few weeks ago to pick a sensible vehicle for
touring the winding mountain roads around Santa Barbara, California, chances are
excellent we'd probably have neglected to mention Mercedes-Benz's ML series,
much less its top-of-the-line ML63 AMG. Fettled by the company's in-house tuning
department, the extra-picante version of the weighty SUV has only just reemerged
in a third edition with more power than ever: 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque,
from the now-ubiquitous AMG 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V-8.
High-riding vehicles with mad amounts of horsepower have never struck us as a good idea, even if there's clearly money to be made by offering them to those whose bank accounts trump their understanding of vehicle dynamics. And more muscle, in a vehicle that upon our last visitation was already content to write checks its chassis couldn't cash, hardly recommended the 2012 ML63.
All that, of course, was before we'd driven it, and before Mercedes brought
its best technology to bear on the question of how to make something this tall
(70.7 inches) and heavy (5093 pounds in its stocking feet) not only go fast --
really big engines have long been known to take care of that chore -- but
actually go around corners. And in this sense, the new ML63 is a revelation.
Thanks to Mercedes-Benz's Active Curve System, which curbs roll like nobody's
business, and the ML63's air suspension with its adaptive dampers, the ML
changes direction while remaining so flat and level that you begin to realize
that you're having fun on a winding road -- in an SUV. While the ML63 probably
won't fully convince you, a knowledgeable enthusiast, that you're in a sports
car, wicked exhaust burble notwithstanding, it won't cause you or your
passengers to evacuate lunch when you're carving back roads. And in this class
of vehicle, that, friends, marks significant progress.
If you want a Mercedes SUV that scares you, you'll want to wait for the new
G63 AMG, whose antique chassis is never going to be a match for its new,
speedier motor. Opt for the ML63 AMG, though, and while you may not make the
same psychographic statement, you will benefit from electromechanical,
speed-sensitive power steering and giant brakes. If the standard AMG body kit
and interior accoutrements are not ostentatious enough for you, you may choose
an optional Performance Package, which not only injects an additional 32 hp and
44 pound-feet of torque, but also buys the carbon fiber engine cover, special
steering wheel, and red-painted calipers our test vehicle sported.
Twenty-one-inch wheels may replace the standard twenties, which to our eyes are
plenty big enough.
So what we have in the ML63 is an SUV that defies the laws of physics and in
so doing becomes the new class of its class. While we might still question the
need for this breed of animal, we do think it worthy of mention. Finally, it
seems, you can make pigs fly.
2014 Chevrolet Impala In Depth
Chevrolet Impalas of the 1960s were immensely popular cars, for good reason.
They combined youthful design with a graceful elegance that embodied the brand's
promise of offering more than you'd expect for "low-priced three" money. The car
that preceded the Impala seen here was nothing like the swingin' '60s model,
even if it looked old enough to be designed from a rejected drawing discovered
in Bill Mitchell's sock drawer. Outside, the new Impala draws on "heritage" for
pre-1980s expressiveness, explains Mike Pevovar, GM's global Epsilon design
manager for North America. "The Impala has a heritage of its own," he adds,
though his team assiduously avoided nostalgia.
My brief first drive was in an early-build engineering-development LTZ
with the 3.6, which I followed with a turn at the wheel of a $40,000-plus 2013
Ford Taurus Limited powered by the 288-hp 3.5-liter. Being a handbuilt
preproduction car, the '14 Impala doesn't have the body rigidity expected of
factory-built autos. So with all such developmental drives, mental adjustments
must be made.
The 3.6 remains one of GM's best engines, and it doesn't disappoint in
the Impala. It feels quicker than the base Taurus, and its six-speed automatic
snicks off upshifts smoothly and quietly. The four-banger ought to be more than
a curiosity in this car. I drove a 2013 Malibu with the new, 195-hp engine, and
it's smooth, quiet, and powerful in that lighter sedan.

2010 Aston Martin DBS UB-2010 Special Edition
From the March, 2010 issue of Automobile MagazineIt’s been nearly a decade since
Dr. Ulrich Bez assumed the helm at Aston Martin, but instead of awarding its CEO
a jewel-encrusted tie-tack, the folks at Gaydon crafted a better gift to
celebrate his milestone: a special-edition DBS.
Dubbed the UB-2010 Limited Edition, the special DBS models are a product
of Aston’s Works Service program, which is typically employed by customers
desiring personalization to the nth degree. In this instance, Bez himself
specified the unique color scheme, which includes an “Azurite Black” paint hue,
metallic bronze leather with woven seat inserts, and a special “Cryptic Titan”
interior trim finish.
Each DBS UB-2010 will wear special doorsill plates with Bez’s signature.
Aston says Bez will personally sign off on each of the UB-2010 cars, lending his
signature to the car’s final inspection plate as well.
Only 40 examples of the UB-2010 will be manufactured --20 coupes and 20
Volantes -- but Aston has yet to set prices for the special-edition cars. Should
you miss out on the run, however, we imagine Works Service could build you
something similar -- sans the Bez autograph -- for the right price.
Hyundai i30 Wagon
Hyundai has showed off photos of its new i30 Wagon that will make its world
debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The all-new wagon will join the i30
hatchback in Hyundai's European lineup later this year.
We know the i30 hatchback here in the States as the all-new 2013 Hyundai
Elantra GT, which made its debut earlier this month alongside the two-door
Hyundai Elantra Coupe at the Chicago Auto Show. American buyers also get a
third, sedan version of the Elantra, as well.
The new i30 Wagon is powered by the same engines as the Euro i30
Hatchback, including three gas and three diesel engines, ranging from 89 to 133
hp. Overall length of the wagon is up 7.3 inches to 176.6 inches compared the
hatchback, and cargo room behind the rear seats has grown to 18.6 cubic feet;
with the rear seats folded cargo space is more than tripled to nearly 58 cubic
feet.
Hyundai's i30 Wagon was designed alongside the i30 hatchback at Hyundai's
R&D center in Ruesselsheim, Germany, "enabling the stylists to fashion a
coherent design that bears a strong family resemblance inspired by Hyundai's
fluidic sculpture form language," according to Hyundai.
The i30 hatchback and wagon are nearly identical on the front, but from
the B-pillar back the wagon's roofline extends further back giving it a proper
station wagon look while retaining Hyundai's family resemblance.
The rear window
wraps around the D-pillar to decrease blind spots.
The i30 Wagon will be the second bodystyle of the i30 line sold in
Europe, and Hyundai has no plans to bring it across the pond. Should Hyundai
bring a proper Elantra Wagon stateside, for a full lineup of C-segment cars? Or
does the upcoming GT model fill the bill for a practical, yet sporty five-door?

Kia Cee'd Hatchback
The first-generation Kia Cee'd ushered in a new design language for Kia in Europe, and it looks as if history is about to repeat itself. The next-generation Cee'd, which is slated to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, appears to push the design envelope even further.
The latest Cee'd - which is likely to remain a European exclusive - remains a hatchback, but shares only its daylight opening shape with its forebear. The new Cee'd packs plenty of Kia's latest design DNA into a compact vehicle: the corporate "tiger nose" grille is more prominent than ever, and flanked by long, tapered headlamps and a dramatically flared hood. As usual, the car also receives LED running lamps placed along the lower edges of the headlamp housings.
Further back, the new Cee'd shares a number of cues with the smaller Rio: taillights are mounted high up the curvaceous rear end, although the bumper cut echoes the shape of the hatch stamping itself. The lower diffuser is also a little more sophisticated, with raised accents surrounding the rear reflectors, license plate, and lower diffuser.
Inside, the interior is anything but drab. Like the Optima, the Cee'd's instrument panel wraps into the center stack. Grey plastic materials used on the dashboard itself are broken up with strips of glossy piano black trim. Door panels are two-toned, and the leather seats shown here feature contrast stitching. The look is refreshingly high-end - which is welcome, considering the C-segment continues to move upmarket in around the globe.
As for the mechanicals, it's still anyone's guess: Kia has been tight-lipped about the car's selection of engines. Currently, European models feature a range of gasoline and diesel engines that make anywhere between 89 and 126 horsepower, but it's been rumored that the Procee'd, the three-door version of the Cee'd, could make use of the the same 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine used in the new Hyundai Veloster Turbo.
Also unknown at the moment is whether or not this car will make it to the United States. We wouldn't be surprised if it didn't: after all, the previous Cee'd was designed expressly for the European market, which left North America with the Forte. We may not see a Cee'd on our shores, but we can only hope the next Kia C-segment offering for North America looks this good.
Toyota NS4 Plug-In Hybrid
Toyota unveiled the NS4 plug-in hybrid at the 2012 North American Auto Show.
Toyota is using the NS4 to demonstrate future safety features, connectivity
technology, efficient drivetrain, and design ideas. Many members of the crowd
were expecting to see another variation on the Prius theme and were surprised to
see one of Toyota’s most interesting designs.
Powered by the next-generation of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, the NS4
is NOT envisioned as a halo vehicle at the top of the Prius sub-brand, but
rather is meant to indicate that as public interest in alternative powertrain
vehicles increases, HSD will be extended to more non-Prius vehicles. As for that
“next generation” HSD, it features smaller and lighter components, improved
overall fuel economy, better acceleration, longer all-electric range, and a
short charge time, but does NOT adapt a Volt-style drive system that enables the
internal combustion engine to turn the wheels directly for improved efficiency
and permits full-range speed and acceleration in electric mode.
Connectivity is said to be elevated to a new level in the NS4 with a
user-interface that includes a multi-touch screen that looks and feels like a
smartphone. We’re assured that it will be simple and intuitive to operate,
conveying information quickly without distraction while maximizing driver
awareness (didn’t Ford say that about SYNC?). This system is supposedly capable
of “learning” driver preferences and habits to anticipate driver responses in
certain situations. Other interesting features of the liftback sedan include
doors that swing up and out to clear high curbs (like an Aston Martin Rapide’s),
and new hydrophobic glass (naturally sheds water and fog) that manages to reduce
glare and ultraviolet light transmission without blocking radio waves (did you
know that earlier anti-UV glass made some cars shield the signal from
criminal-tracing ankle-bracelets?).
On the safety front, there’s a suite of collision-avoidance systems that
use millimeter-wave radar and stereo-vision cameras to predict and avoid
lane-departure, rear-end, and pedestrian collisions. The headlights are fully
adaptive to provide high-beam illumination while preventing glare when other
cars or pedestrians are present. For now, the NS4 is purely a concept car and we
find all of the tech goodies reasonably interesting, but what we REALLY hope is
that cars like the Camry get a bit of this styling love by 2015–or earlier .
